Sam Schufman - Top Gear

Top Gear is a British television show about cars, motor vehicles, and badassery, that airs on BBC. One can assume by it’s crude jokes, all-male British cast, and topic, that it is primarily geared towards English men with automobiles. Although the show is based in London, it airs worldwide on channels like BBC America and through internet hubs like Hulu and Netflix. The show, although recently cancelled, has made a huge impact on the motoring world throughout its 13 years on air. Unlike most TV shows, Top Gear is formatted like a magazine; it's go-to segments include international escapades and car reviews, host-to-host challenges, celebrity appearances, and news skits. This makes Top Gear a very interesting piece of media, because it is unique to most informational TV we’ve seen before. Another factor essential to Top Gear’s popularity are the characterful hosts: Richard Hammond, James May, and Jeremy Clarkson. Each with a distinct personality and impressive backgrounds in television journalism and presentation, the three hosts engage in tomfoolery, pranks, and fierce competition that not only make the show informational, but also a hilarious hit among tv ratings. Many car manufacturers have looked to Top Gear as an essential marketing outlet; review and exposure in a Top Gear segment could spell success or failure for a new car model. It is important to note, however, that some opinions may be biased. This TV show has impacted me by influencing me to love cars, and pursue a career in automotive engineering. While watching, I can learn something new and interesting while also staying engaged with the exciting and laughable segments the producers have put together.

  1. this show also got me more interested in cars and the endless innovation that can be done to them. This show also made me lean towards the automotive side of engineering rather than biomedical.
