Throughout my life I have enjoyed many different movies and TV shows, each with their own unique message or plot. However, when I first saw the movie Forrest Gump it instantly became one of my favorites. For no specific reason, I found myself drawn to the movie and the idea that success can come from just being oneself. The director of the film, Robert Semeckis, grew up in a strict catholic household where artistic expression was thwarted by his parents, even though he loved film and television. This constant denial by his family led him to believe he had to be true to himself and succeed in movies spite of all those who didn’t believe in him, a message that clearly shows up in Forrest Gump. The movie really targets all of the people who have been told they cannot be successful for whatever reason -- like Forrest’s lack of intelligence -- and shows that being oneself can overcome all doubters. I use this message throughout school whenever I question if I should risk being myself even if it isn’t the most popular idea, and remember that being myself is always the most important factor to success in life.
