John Smith - Phil Keaggy

When I was fourteen, my oldest brother left for college and left his acoustic guitar in his room, which started my lifelong love of playing the guitar. Soon after that moment, I started searching out for talented guitarists to emulate and stumbled upon the music of Phil Keaggy. Declared by Guitar Player Magazine as one of the world's top three most talented guitarists, Phil Keaggy displays amazing creativity and skill that I can only dream to reach. His style, often compared with artists like Michael Hedges, blends together a variety of complex -- often on-the-fly -- acoustic picking using digital delays to create a complex layered sound. In this particular clip of a song entitled "County Down," one can hear his style that sounds like a blend of folk, country, and classical guitar. When I was about 18, I tried to play this song, which, as you can hear in the second video with the guitar icon, certainly didn't reach Phil Keaggy's precision and skill. I still play guitar today, whenever I can squeeze it in after putting the kids to bed and finishing school work, and still look up to the talent of Phil Keaggy.
